The Beauty And Practicality Of The Sash Windows Make Them A Smart Choice

By James Carlton

How is house is normally judged by people is based on the exterior. There is nothing on the exterior that will get more attention than the windows. Making a poor decision about what shutters to use or what frame of window could leave a poor impression on the house. There are many decisions that can be made when it comes to the windows. Sash windows will always make a house more attractive.

These kind of windows come in many different ways and are able to open in many different ways as well. The piece of glass is called a slash. There are two different pieces of glass that will move vertically or horizontally depending upon how it is made. The English have made this type of window very popular and so have any country that has any relationship with England whatsoever.

The hung windows have had a very long history. It made its first appearance in a painting that was done in 1658. During the 1670s in England was when this type of window was first used. A Englishman by the name of Robert Hooke first designed this type of window. The Victorian and Edwardian type homes have used these type of windows in England since they have been created.

Despite the thinking that only two kinds of sash windows exist, there are more than that. The double and single hung are the ones that are the most chosen by renovators and builders. There are a few churches in the New England region that have quadruple and triple hung windows. When both pieces move in the same motion, either up or down, it is a double hung version. A single hung window can only move in one direction. It is most often the bottom piece that can be moved.

Back in England when the units were first created they used an elaborate pulley system. This was used so the panes of glass could be moved independently and there was no risk of falling. Today there is more of use of springs and hinges to keep the windows from falling down spontaneously. Currently each window made is balances, springs and weatherstripping to keep it from falling out of alignment.

There are many threats to this type of window that would prevent it from working correctly. Rotting and distortion of the wood are problems and prevent the glass from fitting in the frame properly. This type of window tends to rattle in the wind. There could also be problems with the sliding mechanism that could make it unable to open. These types of windows actually take quite a bit of work to maintain.

Despite the problems with these windows there are quite a few benefits, such as good looks and keeping up with the current housing laws. The sash style window has been around for hundreds of years and this must be because it is a popular style of window that is eye catching for continuing generations. It will continue to be a good choice of window for those building houses or replacing windows for years to come.
