How To Create The Best Kitchen Lighting

By Becky Ponder

Back in the day the kitchen wasn't a social hangout like it is today. It was simply meant for preparing food and that's about it. Kitchens weren't cozy like they are now, but the bigger factor was lighting.

Clearly, the modern day kitchen has changed. It's now the most popular room in the common home. The lighting in the past was completely different and couldn't provide the same effects as today. The common light in the kitchen was a large fluorescent light, which in fact was bright. Although they did give off plenty of light, they didn't give the cozy feeling to home owners.

Once lighting was changed in the kitchen, home owners started spending more time in this room with friends and family. The options now available for use in the kitchen have made it more appealing as a social room. The modern additions of things like kitchen islands and bars as well as flat screens in the kitchen make it more inviting.

Many kitchens still lack the properly lighting, although they've modernized in other areas. Most kitchens do have ceiling lights, usually recessed lights but typically they don't give enough light for a kitchen. They don't give the light needed on the counter tops for when the chef is prepping and reading instructions. It's quite often you'll notice a shadow in the kitchen, due to the angle of lights and walls.

Every kitchen needs ceiling lights as they're the best way to supply background lighting. However, if you're really looking to brighten up a kitchen and light it up properly, you'll need to include several styles of lighting.

Pendant lights or even mini pendant lights look great in any kitchen, especially when they're hanging over a bar or table. They can also provide the right amount of light as the LED lights are quite bright. Additionally, wall units can be a great place to position lighting as well as under counter tops.

If you're uncertain about what size lights to use, the size of the wall unit can help figure this out. One popular lighting design on a glass wall unit has been including the lighting inside the glass wall unit. LED lighting is a great way to add a touch of modern style and provide the extra light needed in the kitchen.

One common mistake home owners often make is finding the right size lighting for the space. Always consult a professional for advice. Take your time shopping around as this can be a major investment in your home. Good light can completely change the feel of the room, so be do it right!
